I majored in philosophy, Late in my undergrad career, I decided I wanted to get into linguistics instead, so I applied for PhD programs. I had a 3.95 GPA, had taken around 15 graduate-level courses as an undergrad (5 in B and 10 in A), good recommendation letters (I think) and an interesting writing sample.

A note on professional programs versus academic programs. Professional programs are definitely easier to get admission into than academic programs. Academic Master's are used by students with average to good profiles to get valuable (research) experience and brush up their GPA before applying for a PhD program.

Advice about graduate school in Philosophy.. If you simply want a deeper understanding, then you do not need to get into a great PhD program. There are many good programs around, and (if you are in a city) there probably is one not very far away. The cheapest way of attaining this goal is simply getting a library card, and devoting your time.

I am a Physics senior, and will be graduating with a BS in May 2018. Couple weeks back when I really got into the application process, I realized that I don't stand any chance of getting into a good physics PhD program. I have a good GPA in my major and average GRE scores but my application falls short when it comes to research experience.
How hard is it to get into graduate school at Oxford or Cambridge universities?. I suspect that it is possible to get into some Oxbridge graduate programs with a 2:1, but I don't know what the American equivalent would be. Next is the 'lower second' or 2:2. Again, I don't know what the equivalent would be, perhaps a 3.0 gpa.
